Subject
For the grammatical meaning, see predicand.
The subject is the acting entity behind an act of volition.
The fact that volitional processes involve a seemingly autonomous, independent decision on the part of the subject is one of the chief aspects motivating the perception of a self.
While there may indeed be individual action involved -- i.e. action originating in the individual's body itself --, it should also be noted that the environment is not incapable of influencing it, and that even decisions posited as neutral need to justify and define what is meant by this neutrality.
