Identity

Identity is how individuals construe their sameness and otherness from each other and from nothingness. It may include both imposed and internalized, self-construed or self-perceived factors.

Identity as a function is crucial for the establishment of a self because the self uses the perceived stability in the opaque appearance of the other as the basis for its own stability as a distinct, stable entity.
